Tour
Sepilok
This center was established in 1964 to help rehabilitate orangutans which had been orphaned. Just like a human baby, the orphaned young orangutan (which would normally live with its mother for 5-6 years) needs to be taught how to cope in the wild, while its health is carefully monitored during rehabilitation.
Visitors to Sepilok are able to witness the feeding sessions at 10am and 3 pm from a platform and viewing gallery reached via a boardwalk through the lush forest, and later learn even more in the information centre.

Sandakan Memorial Park
The Memorial Park witnessed the death of approximately 2400 Australian and British prisoners of war held by the Japanese in the Sandakan POW camp, within the sight of Allied victory in the Pacific war.
Situated about 11 km outside of Sandakan, the former site of the notorious WWII prisoner of war camp now locates the suburb of Taman Rimba. The clearly sign-posted Sandakan Memorial Park is well maintained and beautifully landscaped, which makes it ideal for solitary soul-searching strolls.
A must-see for history enthusiasts.

Sim Sim Water Village
Sim-Sim Water Village is built by hundreds of wooden stilt houses on the sea and has over one century of history. Travel agents always bring tourists here for sightseeing.
The water village is really a big maze. It is divided into over 20 zones and each zone is accessible by a “bridge”, which is a long concrete or plank walkway extending a few hundred meters to the sea and flanked by houses and shops.

Puu Jih Shih Temple
The extravagant Chinese Buddhist temple perches four kilometres west of the centre of Sandakan. Not as ancient and incense soaked as some of the older temples in town, Puu Jih Shih is bright and shiny, relatively newly built in 1987. Rows of white Buddha statues flank the driveway as you enter. Leave your shoes on shelves provided at the entrance overlooking the sea. The interior is a gaudy mix of red, gold and blue and features writhing dragon-entwined pillars, illuminated statues and gilt Buddhas in all his forms. Tiled floors, polished until they gleam, reflect all and the more recently painted ceiling.
Towers of small gold Buddhas are labelled with the Chinese names of contributors who have donated to the temple: three characters for an individual, and five for a family name.

Agnes Keith House
This museum is located at top of the hill along Jalan Istana, about 10 km from Sandakan Airport and 1km from Sandakan town. This house was rebuilt in 1946/47 and was the first government permanent timber dwelling to be built after the 2nd World War. It was occupied by Mr. Harry Keith, a Conservator of Forests with his wife, Agnes Newton Keith and their son, George.
The Agnes Keith house is furnished simply with reproduction of colonial furniture and genuine antiques. A gallery on first floor tells the story of this remarkable woman, her books and family. A Keith Time-line starts in 1873 and ends in 2004 tracing the past to the present Keith generation. War artifacts are also displayed.
