7th July 2019, a date to be remembered as the very first Marathon have been held at Padang Bandaran, Sandakan. On the day of the event, Sandakan Kicap Running Club as the main organizer successfully on their 1st attempt. About 2000 runners across the country and foreign countries participated. Sandakan Kicap Running Club also invited some influential persons to witness the event, among them, were Kenya’s High Commissioner and Mr David Shem, a Singaporean top fitness coach and a writer to a published book (Just One More Step).
Approximately 400 participated in the full marathon (42 kilometres), while the rest participated in some other categories. The categories were Half Marathon (21 kilometres), 10 kilometres run, and Fun run (5 kilometres). The starting time of the run was varied depending on the categories, it began as early as 1.30am.
Most of the participants that were coming from overseas stayed at Hotel Sandakan, because of its location that only a walking distance to the starting point (Padang Bandaran, Sandakan). For the convenience of the guests, Palm Cafe coffee house was open the whole night and serve late-night snacks while waiting for their run categories to begin.
Despite the ditches and lacking manpower, the organizer handled the event as well as possible to meet their participants’ expectations. According to the Club President Mr John, the Marathon changes the face of Sandakan domestically and internationally and will make the marathon as an annual event for the years to come.
In conjunction with the Forestry’s “Majlis Anugerah Cemerlang 2019” dinner, that was held on 26th July 2019 at Hakka Hall, Sandakan. Around 800 presents during the event, consisting of staffs from all over Sabah.
About 1 month before the event, the Sabah Forestry Department has published an open catering tender notification in the local newspapers. Many restaurants, hotels, and caterers participated. Among the many who applied for the tender Hotel Sandakan have been chosen as the caterer for the event.
Hotel Sandakan is well known for its hotel-class catering service. Halal Chinese Set dishes were served during the night, where Halal food cooked and served in Chinese style.
While the attendees were enjoying their dinner, there were many explicit performances performed by the Forestry’s staffs themselves.
